Leap Castle is a castle situated in Coolderry, County Offaly in Ireland. Originally called 'Léim Uí Bhanáin' or 'Leap of the O'Bannons', the castle was built by the O'Bannon clan. There is a long rich history with Leap Castle but for now we're going to focus on one specific aspect of the castle's history and that is as it's known, 'The Elemental'.

'The Elemental' is one of the many spirits that is reported to reside in Leap Castle, the exact origins of this entity are unknown but there are many theories abound as to how this entity came to be at Leap Castle.

'The Elemental' is said to make its presence known to people that provoke the entity, in the past a woman named Mildred Darby is said to have provoked this entity during Mary's use and interest in the occult. Mary's endeavours with the occult are said to have included automatic writing and séances.

During Mary's involvement with her occult practises it coincided with the discovery in the Oubliette where the bones of approximately 150 bodies were found. It's said that shortly after this discovery Mary had a terrifying experience involving 'The Elemental' entity.

There are a few other ideas or beliefs as to how 'The Elemental' came to be at Leap Castle, a local myth says that the entity is the spirit of an O'Carroll who died in Leap Castle from Leprosy, this story is used as a basis to explain the reported decomposing facial features and strong odour that has been reported to accompany an experience or encounter with 'The Elemental'.

A side note to the above story of 'The Elemental' reported at Leap Castle. An elemental is said to be a being or entity that never existed in human form, according to Paracelsus there are four types of elementals, gnomes, undines, sylphs and salamanders, these correspond to earth, water, air and fire, the four elements. These references can vary depending on what source you read from.
