SAW's Lost Souls are at Muckamore Abbey Hospital in County Antrim, Ireland. This location has a long history of patient abuse that is still being dealt with through courts and legal processes to this day.

In a harrowing revelation that ent shockwaves across Northern Ireland, the Muckamore Abbey Hospital abuse scandal has unfolded as the largest criminal safeguarding investigation in the history of the United Kingdom. Allegations of abuse surfaced in July 2018, shedding light on the horrendous treatment endured by vulnerable patients within the walls of the health facility.

According to initial reports, a NHS whistleblower contacted The Irish News, disclosing that nursing staff were privately viewing CCTV footage showing assaults on patients. The footage depicted patients being struck and pulled to the floor by their hair, prompting comparisons to "public inquiry territory". Health authorities, initially silent on the matter, later admitted to suspending 13 staff members, a number that has since escalated to 83 suspensions and seven dismissals.

Subsequent leaks fueled a campaign for an inquiry, spearheaded by Glynn Brown, a parent aggrieved by the lack of transparency surrounding an assault on his non-verbal son. In September 2020, Northern Ireland's Minister for Health, Robin Swann, ordered a public inquiry under the Inquiries Act 2005, marking a pivotal moment in the quest for justice.

The inquiry's first public hearings commenced in Belfast, unveiling the profound extent of the abuse. Lead detective Jill Duffie testified that the investigation had unearthed approximately 1,500 suspected crimes in one ward alone over a six month period. The meticulous examination of 300,000 hours of CCTV footage has taken a toll on investigating officers, with many requiring occupational health support due to the distressing nature of the material.

"To date, there have been 34 arrests", confirmed Duffie, "with eight individuals facing charges ranging from ill treatment to false imprisonment and assault".

The inquiry, chaired by Tom Kark QC, is set to scrutinise decades of events, with a focus on preventing future occurrences. Kark emphasised the centrality of patients in the proceedings, reassuring attendees that support services would be readily available throughout the hearings.

Meanwhile, Muckamore Abbey Hospital, once hailed as a model community for individuals with learning disabilities, now stands tarnished by the scandal. Despite its former status, the hospital's reputation has been irreparably damaged. Today, it houses a mere 37 patients as of June 2022, a stark contrast to its heyday when it accommodated up to 1,000 individuals.

Efforts to resettle patients into the community have been underway since 2019, with a pledge from the Department of Health to ensure that "no one should have to call Muckamore their home". However, the facility remains operational, albeit with diminished capacity.

The Department of Health has announced the scandal hit Muckamore Abbey Hospital is to close in June 2024.
