Ireland's Newest Museum 'Irish Wake Museum' Tells The Story Of Life And Death In Ireland

Ireland has it's first ever Wake Museum that brings you on a guided tour of with an expert in the story of Life and Death in Ireland.

The tour is a 50 minute fully guided tour in 15th century Almshouse in Waterford, the guided tour costs €11 per person and it's recommended for people 14 years of age and over and it's also advised that the subject matter might not be right for everyone.

The website blurb on the museum states,
Ireland's first ever Wake Museum will take you on an exploration of life and death, detailing traditions and superstitions, from early Christian times right up to the 20th century.

Situated in Ireland's oldest urban domestic building, in what was once a 15th-century Almshouse, the Irish Wake Museum offers visitors a rare opportunity to explore one of the most iconic parts of Irish culture, through the eyes of an expert, on this fully guided tour.

Beginning with a unique audio-visual experience, visitors are taken on a fascinating journey, where the themes of life and death are explored within an intimate space, in order to gain a true understanding of a Wake's unique customs.


Additionally the museum point out the below important pieces of information.
  • Due to the nature of the building unfortunately this building is not suitable for visitors with varying abilities
  • This is a fully guided museum experience
  • In keeping with the spirit of the founders of the Almshouse Waterford Treasures will donate €1 from each admission ticket to the Waterford Hospice Movement.
  • We greatly appreciate that the subject matter of this museum may be upsetting for some and consideration should be taken to ensure that this is the correct experience for you and your companions. We advise that at a minimum it is not suitable for children under the age of 14 years.
