Avian Flu Fears As More Dead Birds Found In East Cork

A "Do Not Touch" order has been issued on the 7th of September 2022 after a number of wild birds were confirmed to have a highly contagious virus, Avian Flu.

Three dead gannets were found on beaches in Youghal by a local on the morning of Wednesday the 7th of August 2022, this follows on from reports of dead birds in the North of Ireland. The three dead birds were found between Claycastle and Redbarn beaches.

The Department of Agriculture has said that there is are increasing reports of the Avian Flu virus in wild birds in the North of Ireland and now being seen on the south coast.

This virus is a highly infectious and can decimate bird populations if action is not taken to mitigate the spread of the virus. The virus has been known to destroy domestic chicken and turkey flocks as it is almost always fatal in infected birds.

The Department of Agriculture advises to "avoid all contact with sick and dead wild birds." even though the virus is considered low risk to humans.

Another four dead birds were reports in Myrtleville on Saturday the 3rd of August 2022. Another two dead gannets were found dead on Garryvoe beach on Sunday the 4th of August 2022. A Cork TD, Christopher O'Sullivan found one dead birds on Inchydoney beach on Sunday as well.

If members of the public see a bird that they suspect is affected by avian flu, they should report sightings to the Department of Agriculture's Avian Influenza Hotline: 01 607 2512 (during office hours) 01 492 8026 (outside office hours) or log it in using the Avian Check app linked below.
