North Korea Blames 'alien things' for Spread of COVID-19

North Korea has blamed it's COVID-19 outbreak on 'alien things coming by wind' which is a reference to accusations of balloons sent over the border from South Korea which North Korea state is being done by groups of defectors.

After two years of stating that there is not one single case of the COVID-19 virus reported in North Korea, the country announced it's 'first' confirmed cases on the 12th of May 2022.

The official news agency, KCNA, said an 18-year-old soldier and a five-year-old child who had touched "unidentified materials" in the eastern county of Kumgang in early April who then showed symptoms and later tested positive for COVID-19.

"A sharp increase of fever cases was witnessed among their contacts and that a group of fevered persons emerged in the area … for the first time,"

The agency went on to tell citizens to, "vigilantly deal with alien things coming by wind and other climate phenomena and balloons in the areas along the demarcation line and borders".

On Friday the 1st of July 2022, the country reported 4,570 cases of people displaying fever symptoms, bring the total to 4.74 million.

There have been 73 reported fatalities in the country so far.

South Korea's unification ministry said there was "no possibility" that COVID-19 entered North Korea via balloons.
