The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said today that 131 confirmed cases of monkeypox have been recorded across 19 countries but that the outbreak remains "containable".

The World Health Organisation has today stated that the current outbreak of monkeypox remains "containable" and that ongoing monitoring of the outbreak is continuing.

Last Friday, 20th of May 2022 there were 80 confirmed cases of monkeypox with an additional 50 cases under investigation across 11 countries.

Today Slovenian N1 television reported that Slovenia is the latest country to report it's first case of monkeypox in a traveler who had returned from the Canary Islands, Spain.

The current situation from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) has been stated as below.

"HPSC has been informed of more than a hundred confirmed cases of monkeypox in the UK, several European countries, North America, Israel and Australia. The vast majority of these cases do not have a travel link to a country where monkeypox is endemic. Several of the cases were diagnosed in sexual health clinics and self-identify as gay, bisexual or other men who have sex with men (gbMSM).

A multidisciplinary Incident Management Team has been established by the HSE to actively monitor this evolving international situation and prepare services in Ireland for the possibility of monkeypox cases arising in Ireland."

There are no known monkeypox cases in Ireland currently.
