A 27 year old Russian man died after jumping from the ninth floor of a condominium in Pattaya on Wednesday, 22th May 2025, in what authorities suspect was a case of drug induced psychosis.

The tourist, identified only as Mikhail, reportedly consumed a substantial amount of cannabis prior to the incident. Security footage and witness statements indicate that he appeared to be in a state of severe distress, claiming he was being chased by a “murderous ghost with bulging eyes”.

Eyewitnesses described the man’s erratic behaviour. One resident stated, “He was terrified. He kept shouting about something following him, something evil. We tried to calm him down, but he wouldn’t stop running”.

Security camera footage showed Mikhail dashing through the corridors of the building at an estimated speed of 20 kilometres per hour before leaping from a balcony. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pattaya Police responded to the incident and conducted a search of the deceased's room, where they found cannabis, smoking apparatus, and no evidence of a physical altercation. Officers concluded that there was no sign of foul play.

“The scene investigation revealed no signs of struggle or any other persons involved”, a police spokesperson said. “Cannabis was found in the room, suggesting possible drug-induced hallucinations”.

This incident comes amid increasing scrutiny of Thailand’s cannabis policies. Although the substance was decriminalised in 2022, the country has seen a rise in cannabis-related health emergencies. In response, Thai Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin has announced plans to introduce tighter regulations on recreational cannabis use within the next 40 days.

The Russian embassy in Thailand has been notified, and an autopsy has been scheduled.

The condominium is located in central Pattaya, approximately 2.5 kilometres from the beachfront. Local authorities have reiterated warnings about the responsible use of cannabis, particularly among foreign tourists who may underestimate its potency or interact with it in unfamiliar conditions.

No further details have been released pending the outcome of the autopsy.
