UFO investigator and filmmaker Mark Christopher Lee has called on the Vatican to release what he claims are “hundreds” of classified documents relating to unidentified flying objects (UFOs), stored in the Holy See’s restricted archives. The appeal comes in the wake of the death of Pope Francis.

Lee, who has explored the connection between religious texts and unexplained aerial phenomena, suggests that the Vatican may be in possession of historical records of sightings, some possibly centuries old. He has urged the next Pope to allow public access to these materials.

Speaking to MailOnline, Lee said,
“If the Church is truly committed to spiritual truth and human enlightenment, then it must no longer suppress information that could fundamentally reshape our understanding of our place in the cosmos.”

His call for transparency follows claims made by a United States Pentagon whistleblower in 2023, who alleged the Vatican was involved in the concealment of a UFO crash in Italy during the 1930s. These allegations remain unverified and have not been supported by publicly available evidence.

Lee also pointed to descriptions of unusual events in religious texts, suggesting they could be misinterpreted accounts of extraterrestrial encounters.

“What people are seeing in the sky, they could be genuine extraterrestrial UFOs, but there's also most likely going to be secret military technology years and years ahead of what we think they've got,”

“I think people in the UFO community need to be aware of that. It's not just little green men visiting, it's more complicated. I think the public deserves to know. We don't need to be protected from this information.”

The Vatican Apostolic Archive, which houses millions of documents spanning over twelve centuries, has long been the subject of speculation. While portions of the archive have been gradually opened to scholars, many areas remain inaccessible to the public.

There has been no official response from the Vatican regarding Lee’s statements or the wider claims of involvement in UFO related matters.
