Bigfoot, Sasquatch, Yeti, Yeren, Yowie, a creature that goes by many names depending where in the world you're looking at. The story or legend of bigfoot goes back many years with many people believing the origins of the creature to come from a combination of stories of wild men, tales from loggers, miners, prospectors etc. as well as mis-identification of known creatures.

Let's have a look at what we know of these unknown creatures roaming the wild and remote areas of the world.

Appearance, from the majority of the reports we're seen to date they mostly all report on a hair or fur covered ape-like creature that stands on two legs and moves with a mix of human/ape movements. The face is usually reported to be hair free, with a ‘leather' like appearance, but with this said there have been very few reports of being close enough to give a detailed description. Most reports state that the creature's height is in the range of 6 to 8 feet tall give or take a bit.

Location, most if not all reports or incidents of bigfoot are in remote, wilderness settings which would be a great idea for an intelligent creature that didn't want to be found. A lot, if not the majority of encounters occur at night.

Behaviour, some bigfoot researchers have stated that a common behaviour seen in encounters with the creature involves throwing of rocks which some researchers say is a territorial display. Damage to trees and foliage and weaved/crisscrossed patterns have also been noted as a territorial trait of bigfoot.

Even with all these known details, none of it is convincing enough to suggest an unknown creature has been living in the wilderness and mountainous regions for so long. Has anything ever been captured on video or tape, yes.

With that yes, a big pinch of salt is needed going forward. All video that has been captured that is in the public domain (can't speak for anything we don't know about at this moment in time) is grainy, unstable, not complete and just very low quality across the board, very similar to any ghost or UFO caught on video.

But there have been audio recordings captured that are said to be that of one or more creatures communicating depending on which audio tape you listen to. One of these audio recordings are known as the "Sierra Sounds", audio recordings from the early 1970's in what has been identified to be the Sierra Nevada mountains. The man that analyzed these recordings was a man named Scott Nelson, a retired US Navy Cryptologic Linguist. Now known as Cryptologic Technicians Interpretive (CTIs) they are experts in linguistics and deciphering information in other languages.

Scott Nelson concluded that these recordings were of non-human origin, "It is definitely a language, it is definitely not human in origin, and it could not have been faked".

Other similar vocals have been heard over the years in different parts of the world in these remote areas. When Les Stroud was filming the show Survivorman he stated that he heard strange vocalisations and that they sounded primate in origin.

Some of the proposed explanations of sightings of bigfoot are misidentification of animals like bears or escaped/released primates and even misidentification of humans. There are documented cases of feral humans living alone in remote areas who have never had human contact, or have been found living with wild animals such as wolves.

Pareidolia is also another possible explanation, this is referenced a lot in ghost sightings due to the inherent bias that already exists by most people that capture video or images. A lot of the time the individual has already made up their mind on what they want to see.

Whatever side of the fence you're on, there is evidence or the evidence that exists can be explained away. There is no hard proof in either direction at this moment in time to say yes or no to the existence of bigfoot.
