Forster Green Hospital, founded in 1897 by tea and coffee merchant Forster Green, was initially established as a sanatorium for tuberculosis (TB) treatment, emphasizing fresh air and open spaces. Located outside Belfast, the site was ideal for its purpose before the advent of antibiotics when treatments included fresh air, rest, and surgical interventions.
With its acquisition of an x-ray machine in 1925, the hospital advanced its diagnostic capabilities, followed by an expansion in 1933 to include operating theatres. The facility underwent several enhancements through the 20th century, adapting to the evolving medical landscape. This included upgrading its x-ray machinery in 1945 and expanding its surgical capacity in 1955.
Significant changes occurred post 1948 with the establishment of the National Health Service, leading to a rebranding to Forster Green Hospital. The hospital's focus shifted over the years, notably in 1983 with the closure of its respiratory medicine wards and radiology department, moving these services to the Belfast City Hospital. The late 1980s and early 1990s saw a redirection towards geriatric care.
In 1997, a specialist rehabilitation unit for serious brain injuries was introduced, which was relocated in 2006 to the Regional Acquired Brain Injury Unit at Musgrave Park Hospital. This history reflects the broader trends in healthcare evolution, from TB treatment to a comprehensive medical and surgical facility, adapting continuously to meet changing healthcare needs.
The facility was permanently closed in 2012.
